At Royal Rise Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. All children, including SEN and Disadvantaged learn the following concepts and themes by delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.

SMSC & British Values

Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
At Royal Rise Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

Relations, Health and Sex Education

At Royal Rise the PSHE curriculum has been designed to meet the needs of our pupils and wider community and will demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the duties of the Relations Education (RE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education HE) whereby schools must provide a ‘balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.

Early Years

PHSE is under the PSED heading is one of the prime areas that underpins our curriculum. In connection with the Characteristics of Learning, we weave the school values into our PSED curriculum. This prepares our youngest children to be resilient, love learning and develop respect each other and the environment they learn in.

Key stage 1 and Key Stage 2

The PSHE curriculum at Royal Rise is a spiral curriculum and children revisit themes and concepts each year. The children's knowledge that has been previously taught is then developed and deepened within further years.

Key Stage and class assemblies always make a link to PSHE, British Values and SMSC. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

We have aspirations at the very start of the year to link to our overarching topic of what do I want to be when I grow up, which then moves into rules and responsibilities for children to develop an understanding of the importance of rules and how they keep us safe and happy. This is developed further in KS2 where they begin to look at British laws.

At the end of each academic year, we then have a link to enterprise where we teach children key life skills linked to money. Between all of this children are covering key aspects which help them to develop into safe, responsible, resilient and healthy individuals who are well equipped to play an active role within the community but also within today's society.

Covid-19 adaptations

We are aware of the difficulties and challenges that Covid-19 has bought to many of the families and children that are part of the Royal Rise community. Therefore, we have adapted our PSHE curriculum to tailor for these needs and implemented a range of strategies, which help measure, monitor and develop our pupil’s wellbeing.

Our PSHE curriculum has been adapted following covid-19. We have a strong emphasis on wellbeing at the start of the year including feelings and how to manage particular feelings. We then move into looking at friendships and will be looking at how we can maintain friendships despite socially distancing.

We will also look at looking after ourselves physically and mentally in order to promote positive wellbeing. These topics look different for every year group as we work on a spiral curriculum, where we build upon prior knowledge and understanding taught in previous years. The PSHE curriculum is continually adapted following assessment of pupil wellbeing.
